5 Prayers

If I were to (or if I ever) be the head master in the school of The Wall I would have (or I surely will) had these tracks as prayers. To be sung each morning in the assembly. Nothing against “our Father who art in heaven and hallowed be Thy name”. Just that these prayers ring more true and strike more resonance and contribute more harmony than “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”. So.

1 The Last Unicorn by America

The Last Unicorn is a fantasy novel written by Peter S. Beagle and published in 1968. The film was produced in 1982 and is considered as one of the finest example of children cartoon and also marks the beginning of the influence of Japanese anime. The soundtrack was done by Jimmy Webb and performed by America. What a track to begin ones morning with!

When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn

When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn
In the distance hear the laughter of the last unicorn

I’m alive, I’m alive

When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn
Look and see her how she sparkles, it’s the last unicorn

I’m alive, I’m alive.

2 No Answers Only Questions by Eric Woolfson

Vulture Culture was remastered and reissued in 2007. “No Answers Only Questions (Final Version)” was sung by Eric Woolfson. This 2:12 minute track just has an acoustic and the Woolfson voice.

Some of us laugh,
Some of us cry,
Some of us lay back – watch the world go by.
Some of us fear,
Some of us hate,
Some of us won’t wake up ’till it’s too late!

The distance between us is a mystery to us all,
The difference between us is so small!

There are no answers, only questions
And we’re all strangers to the truth
But in my mind’s eye
I have found the reason why
And I carry the burden of the proof.

Why do we fight?
Why do we fall?
Why do we stand there – backs against the wall?
Why don’t we change?
Why don’t we try?
Why don’t we turn ’round, help the other guy?

The distance between us is a mystery to us all,
The difference between us is so small!

There are no answers, only questions
And we’re all strangers to the truth
But in my mind’s eye
I have found the reason why
And I carry the burden of the proof.

3 El Condor Pasa (If I Could) by Simon & Garfunkel

El Cóndor Pasa was composed by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, in 1913. This is a track in a zarzuela of the same name. A zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes.

I’d rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
I’d rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
CHORUS
Away, I’d rather sail away
Like a swan that’s here and gone
A man grows older every day
It gives the world
Its saddest sound,
Its saddest sound.
I’d rather be a forest than a street.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
I’d rather feel the earth beneath my feet,
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.

4 Redemption Song

In December 1976, two days before “Smile Jamaica”, a free concert organized by the Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley in an attempt to ease tension between two warring political groups, Marley, his wife, and manager Don Taylor were wounded in an assault by unknown gunmen inside Marley’s home. Taylor and Marley’s wife sustained serious injuries, but later made full recoveries. Bob Marley received minor wounds in the chest and arm. The shooting was thought to have been politically motivated, as many felt the concert was really a support rally for Manley. Nonetheless, the concert proceeded, and an injured Marley performed as scheduled, two days after the attempt. When asked why, Marley responded, “the people who are trying to make this world worse aren’t taking a day off. How can I?” The members of the group Zap Pow, which had no radical religious or political beliefs, played as Bob Marley’s backup band before a festival crowd of 80,000 while members of The Wailers were still missing or in hiding. Reference

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the ‘and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom? –
‘Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
‘Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it’s just a part of it:
We’ve got to fulfil de book.

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom? –
‘Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
‘Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it’s just a part of it:
We’ve got to fulfil de book.
Won’t you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom? –
‘Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs –
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.

5 Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
